'Was That Not a Show?' The Reason a Shortened Test Was No Less a Genuine Test Match.

In a display cabinet on the upper level of the MCG rests a vibrant pink outfit worn by Robbie Williams. The performance in front of a hundred thousand spectators was seen as a success.

It's possible you enjoy the performer. Maybe you feel he is the ultimate present to music the world has ever seen. You might take a reasonable stance, admitting that some songs are fantastic while others are awful.

The key argument is that entertainment can manifest in countless ways. Tastes vary. There is no one way to create literature or even Test cricket.

The Incomparable Variety of The Test Format

The traditional format boasts incomparable variety. It is hard to think of another sport where the outcome is so reliant upon conditions.

The elements, the session, the cricket ball – the variables are numerous. Most important is the wicket.

If the long game is a form of art, the wicket is the blank slate on which the players create their art.

An Abstract Contest: The MCG Match

The fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England was an abstract version of cricket, the traditional sport dismantled and reconstructed in an unusual manner.

This is not a justification of the pitch which produced a victory and the second two-day Test of the Ashes battle.

Having excessive grass on the pitch, causing 36 wickets falling in less than a brief period, is not a fair contest between offense and defense.

A Varied History: The Core of Test Cricket

But any notion this was a diminished spectacle, one that should be footnoted as not a proper Test, is mistaken.

The format is a rich tapestry, a long history and counting. At times, like in Melbourne, the cricket ball behaves unpredictably for the seamers. Sometimes, it grips and turns on a spinning track. Sometimes, the pitch is flat as a pancake, other times it explodes.

The exciting finishes are particularly captivating because of the patience devoted in other matches.

Adaptation: The Core Skill

Specific conditions are tolerated more freely than others.

The debate in Melbourne was that the contest was skewed excessively towards the attack. That the top batters were unable from showcasing their talents.

This level of cricket is about adapting to challenges – reading the conditions and adjusting effectively. The two highest individual innings were made by recognized batters. One line-up committed more errors than the other, and thus were defeated.

Unbridled Joy: The Fan Perspective

Try telling the supporters who have suffered a long drought that this lacked spectacle.

In one section of the stadium, a sea of people made noise and chanted, fostering a festive mood in a bastion of national pride.

There was optimism as the bowlers dominated, momentum when players fought back, and rapturous celebration when the result was confirmed.

Contrasting Examples: The Range of Test Matches

The MCG has a history with controversial surfaces. Previously, a match there featured a strip with the excitement of a pulled Christmas cracker.

That contest was a grind, with limited drama and slow play. The two-day game and that previous match are polar opposites of the scale – one is not more ideal, yet value can be ascribed to them.

Four Tests into the ongoing battle, it is the shortest games that will remain iconic in the memory.

"This isn't the death of the format at all," observed a former player. "The people who have been lucky enough to see these short time have been given some real entertainment. An unusual spectacle."

Baby Steps: A Glimmer of Hope

In the preparation to this Test, the leader addressed the media like a man carrying the enormous pressure on his back.

The players responded for him, bringing back the joy to his countenance.

Emerging talents delivered with key contributions. These are incremental gains, certainly not enough to guarantee long-term success, but a starting point to develop from.

At the very least, this triumph takes its place among other historic performances in dead rubbers.

As the fans departed into a glorious Melbourne evening, the players congregated on the outfield to begin their own celebrations.

Savour the moment, boys. This victory was hard-fought.
