The global fast-food chain has taken down a holiday advert produced via generative AI after encountering significant public disapproval.

The brief film was created using AI video tools and was originally uploaded publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Audience Reaction and Removal

Following its publication, commenters denounced the implementation of AI in the film. A number of called it "creepy" and "jarringly assembled".

"This incident serves as an valuable learning as we explore the appropriate use of AI," commented a statement from the company.

The advert was created for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It showed a series of situations that might go awry over the Christmas break, under the theme "the worst time of the year".

The Trend of AI Commercials

Commercials that include AI-created content have emerged as a rising phenomenon among large companies, notably for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has similarly released consecutive AI-created holiday ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Since videos created using current AI video tools are more likely to distort the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be only a few seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The ad also sparked concerns about automation in the creative sector, with some observers stating it could reduce opportunities for actors.

Response from the Creators

After the video's removal, a producer's CEO, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.

According to her, the production process required "over a month and a half" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then edited afterward "just as we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," she commented. "The result was a film."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was largely criticized, the reception for some AI-generated holiday ads has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created holiday ad from Coca-Cola reportedly achieved a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from the public.

However, other businesses have also received criticism for using the technique in their campaigns. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some described as "lazy" and "disturbing".

The episode illustrates the continuing conversation within the marketing and production industries about the trade-off between new tools and creative integrity.
