Larian Studios Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG to Date

The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction hints that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously permissive, letting players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
